whining sound when accelerator pedal not pressed

It could be an air leak. When the throttle is opened the air flows through the carburettor and when closed a little air does flow through the carburettor but the engine produces a higher vacuum on over-run (throttle closed) than when under load, so if there are any small air leaks in and around...

    New battery

Varta batteries generally have a higher Ah rating than other brands, for a given size. They're therefore better on really cold mornings.

Rear brake shoes dislodged from pistons.

Agreed 100%! The "ouch" factor when fitting & removing brake shoes is always a large one and it's a pity workshop manuals don't explain this way of changing them!

    Car history supplying dealer etc..

I'm not sure if the D.V.L.A. still offer this service, but about 8 years ago I bought a Daf 33 and, after registering the car in my name, contacted the D.V.L.A. for any information they held on it. For (I think!) a fiver they sent me copies of all the documents they held, including the original...

    Diagnosing coolant leakage in oil

Ouch! Is the top of the bolt exposed or did it break inside the cylinder block? I presume the bolt was a new one and not an old one being re-used. it's possible some detritus was at the bottom of the bore, thus affecting the torque reading, but, either way, this is a setback.

    Diagnosing coolant leakage in oil

Agreed 100% with Angel. As to oil, I'd suggest a good quality "classic" 10/40 oil, made by say, Castrol or Millers. As the the sealant, as Angel says, if everything's been machined properly there's no need for an extra sealant, so don't use that, although a light coating of copper grease on...

    Heated Windscreens?

I remember a device somewhat like a heater element that one stuck to the bottom of the windscreen. The heat rose from it, to clear the screen of mist and frost. Not being dependant on the car's heater it worked instantly once the engine was on. I think it must have drawn a HUGE amount of...

    Brake light problem

I suspect you have a faulty earth somewhere and the brake lights are earthing the sidelights. Take the bulbs out of their holders and clean all the terminals, then make sure that the bulb holders are all earthed properly. The electrical current should flow through the bulbs and then to earth...

    Stopping on a sixpence

I wish to council caution regarding your endeavour, for the following reasons: Brake servo systems were initially only fitted to cars that had disc brakes, when disc brakes were the exception, as opposed to normal, and were usually fitted to higher performance versions of ordinary cars. The...

    Roger the Renault says "Hello!"

I'm glad changing the condenser did the job! Too often this item is missed when a car has a misfire.

    Roger the Renault says "Hello!"

I've changed the plugs, the distributor cap, ignition coil, air filter and a new set of HT leads are on their way. I did mess about with the current HT leads, one wasn't conducting very well. Gave it a clean and got a decent resistance out of it. It might be worth changing the condenser as well.

    Roger the Renault says "Hello!"

I take it the car's been recovered back to "a place of safety" (I.E., a lock-up!) by now! A few thoughts: !/ How old is the petrol? Unleaded petrol becomes stale, or "goes off" in time. 2/ Did any warning lights flash before the car ground ignominiously to a halt? 3/ When was the car last...

    Head Gasket replacement

Yes (and no!) Yes, I know a garage and an engineering company who would be capable of carrying out the work, but they're in Borehamwood, in Hertfordshire! I'd suggest popping into a local "old school" garage in your area and seeking the advice of the most "mature" mechsnic in the building! I...

Intermittent misfiring problem and black smoke from the exhaust

The points being very pitted is indicative of a failed condenser, since the pitting means too much current is passing through the points, because the condenser isn't "cushioning" the load. I would check the new points are both clean and correctly set before deciding the condenser's not at the...

    Fuel Delivery

Maybe fitting a pipe with a one-way valve would help? This might prevent the petrol from running back down the pipes and assist starting after it's been standing for a day or so. Just a thought....

    Diagnosing coolant leakage in oil

It should take a while, as it's a complex and labour intensive procedure. A company who take their time are doing it properly, as it shouldn't be rushed. Once you have the head back handle it very carefully, placing it upside down, to protect the newly machined surface from any scathes or...

    Fuel Leak

Whatever the cause I should investigate this as soon as possible. Leaking petrol's a dangerous thing!

    Diagnosing coolant leakage in oil

Don't go mad with aggressive cleaning, as you may cause more damage than you mean to. Once everything is back together and running properly a great deal of the "muck" will burn off if the car's taken on a few long runs. Remember a car is, in many way like one's body and needs regular exercise...
