1990 Renault 4 GTL

Hello! Long time, no see... anyway, after some time, I finally get on schedule for repairing front chassis beams. On Monday, early in the morning, I went to well known little town Žiri in Slovenia. This view was the proof that I am at the right spot...

We worked until 7pm every day. It was about 10 hours of work every day... the room is clean, without tools on the ground, every tool has its own place. 156451445_1031133653956817_2999314356501183016_n.jpg

I had luck because the guy who can repair small dents was around... the rear wing was in really bad shape...

We had to change the valve axle because it had dents and it was making a lot of noise...

The one thing that made me scare of this work is losing original wing seal... but, we had CRAZY luck and the seal stayed on the body... we put new seal on inner side, so this one is now just for decoration, but it is still original... I know I am crazy, but that kind of stuff makes me a lot of happines :D

There are some more things done that I didn't take a photo of... valves and ignition are set, new contacts, gearbox oil changed and last but not the least, the rear end is lifted

I am very satisfied with this work, just like the last time... I had a great fun, learned some new stuff and my Quatrelle got the treatment which she deserves... until next time, stay safe and enjoy!

This is really fantastic! I think that even those who did a bit of work on the cars could get all the information just by looking at projects that are here on the forum.

P.S. Lurking to see what awaits me in the next month or so

Finally right height at the rear.

As soon as you hear that Jan is working on R4 you can not expect anything less than shown.

The Mlinar brothers are wizards when it comes to bodywork and repairs on Renault 4.
Good choice to go to them.
Very nice work. Happy driving.

There is nothing much new with the white one since last time.
But, luckily, I`m not in deficit with R4s :D
This weekend I made quite a long trip. With my girlfriend we went to visit her friends in Jošan, little village in Lika, Croatia. We went on Friday afternoon, and stayed to Sunday. It would be too much for me to spend whole weekend with 3 women so I arranged a trip for myself and visited our member petak in Vodice :D . We talked about little problems, about huge fun we have driving them, and went on a short ride comparing these 2 old Quatrelles :D It was great trip, great weather and great spent day. There was no problem (why it would be, I`m driving R4 :D ), old road and landscape were fantastic. Anyway, you can see by yourself ;)

I made 671 km with 36.13 liters of fuel what shows consumption of 5.38l/100 km or 52.5 mpg if I calculated mpgs correctly :D That is why, along with everything else, I love this car so much...
Absolutely Fantastic! What great landscapes: reminds me of a minor road - with no one travelling on it; i took last year from Portugal into Spain. Good health/boa saude to you from Portugal!

Hello! Quite a long time no see :D
This Friday I had a day off, woke up early and decided to make a trip to Slovenia. I took the old road trough beautiful landscapes and picturesque towns. I visited R4 doctor Jan, we had a launch and coffee and I went back trough Novo Mesto where my R4 was born. I took this great photo with my Polaroid camera in front of a birth place

Also, Jan gave me something I wanted for a very very long time- original silencer :clapping: It was in great condition, but needed a little bit of love...

Then I brushed it and give it a good wash with a nitro thinner

Finally I put the zinc spray and this is the result...

I can't wait to put it on the car... I will do a video of sound before & after...
Thats all for now, see you very soon :waving:

So... about a year ago, I saw some cloudy blue smoke from the exhaust pipe... Trough the years, I collected original Renault parts, so I decided to to a complete engine rebuild.

0.jpg

The choose of mechanic was easy, Jan Mlinar from little Slovenian town Žiri.

The heart stopped at 187 151 km.
1.jpg

On Monday 31.1. I came to Žiri and after two hours, the situation was like this

2.jpg3.jpg4.jpg5.jpg

We opened the engine

8.jpg11.jpg12.jpg13.jpg

Then we started cleaning all the parts in petrol, then in dimer and we dried everything with compressed air

The most of the Tuesda we spent in cleaning
19.jpg20.jpg22.jpg29.jpg30.jpg31.jpg

The car overheated once in it's lifetime, so the liners were polished because the pistons expanded due to high temperature

18.jpg17.jpg

Protecting and painting the engine block
22.jpg23.jpg24.jpg

Painted engine block with great detail of original green paint for easier recognization of the engines in Renault factory

32.jpg35.jpg36.jpg37.jpg39.jpg

Oil pump cleaned and polished
42.jpg43.jpg

Starter renewed
47.jpg

Head when came from resurfacing

Joining the gearbox to the engine. The gearbox was washed, cleaned and then partly painted where the paint was gone. New clutch was inserted
94.jpg95.jpg96.jpg97.jpg98.jpg

Axels are painted and rubber was changed
99.jpg

And engine back in place
100.jpg101.jpg102.jpg103.jpg

This huge work was done trought 5 days. The car is running more smoothly, very quiet, just like new. In next 1000km, the car should be driven gently, and than I have to make service wich includes new oil, rockets adjustment and tightening the head...
That's all for now...
Until next time... :D

Really enjoy your thread about your love affair with Qutrelles.
No treatment is to good for your beautiful cars. Time and money well spent.
Looking forward to next update.
