Building a new workbench

The lathe and workbench are almost done. Now I need to align the lathe and I need to work on the electrical switches.
Unfortunately I can't reverse the electrical AC motor, as I need this to cut metric threads. (it is an inch lathe). But I will figure this out later.

Next time I will make a video on 'cutting in action'!

Cheers & keep safe and healthy!

Congratulations on your new project. Looks marvellous!

I'm pretty sure reversing the AC motor is done via a special switch, no need to change the motor. I have a Myford Super 7 lathe, with a Dewhurst forward/reverse switch. I changed the original three phase motor to a single phase one, keeping this switch, and I still have reverse.

Oehh, would love to own a decent myford super 7. Nice pieces of machinery :D

Problem of my AC motor is that I miss a separate wire to the starterwinding. I need this to switch the rotating direction. In theory I can fix this, but it involves a lot of work..

Aaaargh! I was driving on the highway, cruising around 100km/h, and suddenly I heard a scraping noise (very short) from the gearbox. When I reached my destination, I noticed that the reverse gear is 'dead'. I can't select it... Can you help me determine the cause? I'm on a short holiday trip and I can't work on it. Will it be a full gearbox overhaul, or can it be much simpler? What are your thoughts?

:(

It could be the lever attached to the underside of the transmission lid, it may have worked loose. You could take the lid off the gearbox with it still in the car. If it isn't the lever the transmission might have to come out.

Fingers crossed it is nothing too severe :).

IMG_20200531_113606.jpgyup, we didn't make it far. Gearbox is
€&)@#&. Ah well, I will pick her up next week, and friends are coming over to pick us up. Only 150 km's from my workshop..

But you know, it is wonderfull that other classic car drivers stop & ask if they can help! :)

Murphy's law of inconvenient malfunction did it, I hope that Murphy's law of selective gravitation didn't do something...
Just this morning I PM'd you on the reverse gear shifter etc. Now everything has to come out.
Good luck Jurjen and don't hesitate to ask.

Sorry to hear about your gearbox problems.

Believe you will fix it really soon

I decided to completely overhaul my gearbox before i fit it :) this might help me to avoid situations like that in the future...
Or not if i mess something up :D

Good work Domsky! :clapping::waving:

We all know what this means :D

And here is the magic moment.. :scared:

To work on the gearbox I decided to remove the engine & gearbox.
IMG_20200605_161723.jpg

After some time on the bench I found the missing parts, shatterd by the gears..

The gears & rotation of the shafts seems to be oke. No missing teeth and no resistance while turning the shafts. So I will give it a good clean.
So I think that something about 'bolts & gears' is the main story of my relationship with Louise :D

cheers, Jurjen

The gearbox looks nice and clean inside,
Do you think that could be the case of forgetting to tighten te bolt while assembling?

I'm pretty sure I tightend the bolt, but probably not enough. To what torque should the bolt be set?

The old notation in French says 2,8 mètre.decaNewton equals 2,8 daNm equals 28 Nm
To me it looks as if the reverse shifter has been replaced in the past, it just looks to new, so maybe it wasn't tightend enough at that moment.
And uhm Jurjen, this time you can't weld the bolt in place :D

Holy moly, unfortunately I had to dismantle the complete gearbox to be able to replace the broken shifter. We had real trouble to get one of the differential bearings out. It was stuck like & #@(=%

We used heat, made a special tool, and eventually we used brutal force and and airhammer. The other side came loose like butter.

Fortunately I had a spare part lying around :D. I cleaned the threads in the gearbox which were very dirty and a bit rusty. I applied high temperature grease and the parts screwed in very easily, just by hand :fighting:.

I marked the bearing on the passengers side, so that's in the original position. The other bearing(drivers) side needs to be adjust. Which clearance to the differential do I need to measure? Any advise, tips?

Cheers!

I reassembled the gearbox, new seals, gave the engine compartment a good clean, refitted the gearbox to the engine and shuffled it back in. Next time fit all the bits & parts..

Now off to home for a beer  cheers!
